What is NLP?

NLP or Neuro-linguistic Programming is a series of techniques used by the NLP Leader and Coach to change the communication between the unconscious level and conscious level of one's mind. The purpose is to help create congruence between one's intentions and actions. Therefore, one's life is more harmonious and peaceful, more dynamic and self-directive, more satisfying and self-expanding, and finally much happier and fulfilling.

The Definition of NLP

NEURO

“Neuro” refers to the nervous system (the mind) through which our experience is processed via the five senses:

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Kinesthetic
  • Olfactory
  • Gustatory

LINGUISTIC

“Linguistic” encompasses language and other nonverbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered, and given meaning.

  • Pictures
  • Sounds
  • Feelings
  • Tastes
  • Smells
  • Words/Self-Talk

PROGRAMMING

Programming is the ability to discover and utilize the programs we run (our communication to ourselves and others) in our neurological systems to achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

Who Invented NLP?

Richard Bandler and John Grinder defined and developed NLP in the 1970s. They were professors of mathematics and linguistics, respectively, at the University of Santa Cruz, California.

Bandler and Grinder had a fascination for the processes of the mind; more precisely, they were curious about the mental fabrics of those who achieve excellence regardless of their field of work or industry. So they asked a crucial question: "What is it that makes the difference between somebody who is merely competent and someone who excels at the same skills?”

Bandler and Grinder not only studied but also modeled highly successful individuals. They found that they each had a unique, clear, and specific success strategy and mental patterns that directed their moves. In addition, their background as professors in mathematics and linguistics characterized their approach. NLP, therefore, is their natural "spelling out" of the functions of individual minds and their communication with the individual's body and the world around them.

Bandler and Grinder combined their skills with intuition to create NLP as a model for being successful, regardless of where a person starts, where they come from, or their field of interest.

How Does NLP Work?

NLP is the language of our mind, the part of our mind that runs our life beyond our conscious awareness and creates results that are not always satisfactory. As a result, we experience various negative emotions and unconsciously sabotage ourselves.

For instance, you want more money, yet it seems there are never enough weeks and months to earn more money. The gap between what you want and what actually happens creates fear, anxiety, or makes you feel overwhelmed or stressed. Our thoughts or intentions, desires, and highest aspirations do not match the reality of our daily life. Our actions seem to contradict our intentions.

NLP sessions are designed to help you reestablish a clear communication between your conscious mind and your unconscious mind, whether in group sessions or one-on-one settings. The goal is to have your unconscious mind successfully execute the things you consciously want (your desires, your goals, your dreams, and your aspirations).

A series of NLP techniques and strategies are utilized to help delete information stored in your unconscious mind that sabotages what you want to accomplish. Just like a computer technician debugs a computer program by deleting and replacing it with new and more efficient computer language, NLP helps delete information from your unconscious mind so that it can execute at a higher level of performance and competence.

In addition, the NLP method can be utilized to access the unique success strategy embedded in each individual's unconscious level of the mind. By accessing it and applying it to your present being, a new state emerges that allows you to move toward the direction of your desires and goals.

NLP success processes create congruence between what you want and what you do, between your intentions and your actions. As a result, you feel more energized instead of tired and stressed, and more positive and strong as opposed to hopeless and discouraged. You feel more confident and motivated instead of feeling afraid and anxious, etc. Instead of hoping for the best, you now know you can create exactly the life you want.

The major difference between a group session and a one-on-one setting is the depth of the experience of the NLP Success Strategy. A one-on-one setting offers privacy and more time for the presented problem and issues that may pop up and require immediate resolution.

Think of learning a specialized skill, like singing and properly using your voice. A one-on-one session would be similar to taking private voice lessons instead of being in a music class with other students. Your inner voice of personal power emerges at a higher frequency of energy, and the level of success is heightened and accelerated.
